Suggestions for Week of May 11-15
Reading/Writing - aim to read for 20-30 minutes each day. You can read books that you have at home, go on GetEpic, or Kids A-Z.
Try reading some fairy tales (like Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, etc) this week. Then practice writing a retell of the story. Retells should include the most important details (or main events) in order. A good retell includes an introduction that tells the setting (when and where the story takes place) and a description of the main characters. Make sure to include the problem in the story (this usually happens near the beginning) and the solution to the problem (usually happens at the end). Use sequencing words like first, then, next, after, and finally. Here is a video that explains this idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBjt2qhl7es
Here's my example of a retell of The Three Little Pigs:
The Three Little Pigs is a story about three little pigs and a big bad wolf. Each of the pigs builds a house. The first pig builds his house out of straw, the second builds his out of sticks, and the third builds his out of bricks. The big bad wolf is hungry and wants to eat the pigs. He goes to the first house and blows it down with his powerful breath. The first little pig runs to the second pig's house. Then the wolf comes along and blows down the second pig's house. Next the pigs run to the third house. The wolf tries to blow down the brick house but is not able to because it is so strong. Finally, the wolf attempts to go down the chimney but burns himself in the hot soup pot and runs away.
Math -
Number talk example: adding tens 23 + 30 =
Counting collection: count a collection and then discuss the following...how many would I have if I added two more/took two away, added ten more/took ten away, how many more/fewer would I need to have 20/50/100?
Game of the Week: Sheppard Software - choose a math game to play!
