Suggestions for Week of May 4-8
Reading - aim to read for 20-30 minutes each day. You can read books that you have at home or go on GetEpic or Kids A-Z.
*Remember that reading is about decoding (solving unknown words) and comprehension (understanding what you read). This week focus on inferring when you talk about your reading together. Discuss the meaning of words based on clues in the text. Ex. Eddie was at the park. He attempted to pump himself on the swings. He tried by kicking his feet and pulling on the chains with his hands. *What do you think attempted means?
You can also infer why a character says or does something. Look for clues in the text and think about your own experiences to make a good inference. Graphic novels and comics are great texts for inferring because there are often no words and you have to use the picture clues. Dig out your DogMan books! Mo Willems' Pigeon series or Elephant & Piggie books are great texts to practice inferring with too. I have assigned The Green Dog by Melinda Luke on your Epic account - give some inferring a try!
Writing - It's Mother's Day this coming Sunday! For writing this week let's celebrate moms! You can write poems about mom (acrostic, similies, cinquain, haiku) and turn it into a book and/or make her a card.
Math -
Number talk example: add groups of ten like 20 + 50 =
Counting collection: count a collection and then discuss the following...how many would I have if I added two more/took two away, added ten more/took ten away, how many more/fewer would I need to have 20/50/100?
Game of the Week: Store
Set up a pretend store in your house. Choose at least 5 of your toys and make price tags for them. How much money would you get if someone bought them all? Make some pretend money and have someone in your family go shopping. How much will they have to pay you? Do they get any change?
